To Ripple or Wave an object.

Ripple and Wave create wave patterns like ripples on water or shock waves in outer space. 

First of all select a plane with more segments.












Apply a Ripple modifier.(or Wave modifier).
Adjust Amplitude1 to affect rippling in one direction. Then adjust Amplitude 2 to affect the other direction.
Change the Wave length as needed.
Use decay if you want the ripple to fall off as it moves away from the modifier center.
The Phase helps you animate Ripple or Wave  modifier over time.
